How it works – accepted writers have from April to June 17 to produce a manuscript of up to 10,000 words, then work on the manuscript during the residency (writers are paid $3,000)

Bread Loaf Writers Conference

Lectures, craft classes, meetings with editors and agents, readings by faculty and guests, workshops in poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction

Dates – the 2005 conference runs Aug 17 to Aug 28 in the Green Mountains of Ripton, Vermont

Cost – $2,000, including room and board

Submit up to 10 pages of poetry, or up to 6,000 words of fiction or non-fiction

No application fee

Application deadline is March 19

Macdowell Colony

Offers residencies of up to 2 months to new and established poets, fiction writers and creative non-fiction writers on a 450-acre estate near Mt. Monadnock in Peterborough, NH. Writers receive room and board (other creative forms, such as art and dance are also represented at the colony)

 

Writers submit published book of poetry or up to 10 poems; a published novel or two or three chapters; a published short story collection or two or three stories; a published book of creative non-fiction or two or three essays

Deadline is January 20
