Business and technical writing

Technical writing experience

I’ve created and edited dozens of online help systems and end-user manuals for software companies like ADP Dataphile and Maximizer, training organizations like Drake Computer Training and the Vancouver School Board, and law firms such as Fasken Martineau and McCarthy Tetrault.

Business writing experience

I’ve written a wide, wide range of material for corporate clients like Pfizer and 360networks: feature articles, web site copy, intranet text, policies and procedures, and client newsletters.

My specialties draw on my journalism background:

·       Feature articles and profiles for in-house and external publications

·       Company histories

·       Issue-oriented white papers

So do my work habits. The operations manager at a current client describes me this way:

“You are incredibly efficient, meaning that you’re fast and accurate, and produce work that meets the requirements under tight deadlines. You know how to take complex material and distill it into usable copy for the target audience.”

Journalism experience

I began my writing career in northern Manitoba as one of two reporters for the Thompson Citizen, Canada’s smallest daily newspaper. For two years I wrote a dozen news and feature stories a day. Now that’s deadline pressure.

I went on to hold staff jobs at the Barrie Examiner, Ottawa Journal and Globe and Mail. I continue to freelance for the Globe, Boston Globe, Ottawa Citizen, Vancouver Sun and other newspapers.

I think my journalism background helps me bring a strong story-telling flair to every writing assignment I tackle.
